Catalina Farías

I am a Ph.D. student in Media, Technology, and Society at Northwestern University. My research focuses on how marginalized and racialized communities access, use, and (re)appropriate technologies. Specifically, I am interested in understanding why these communities use media technologies and go online, exploring their perceptions of these technologies, examining the dynamics of their interactions with technology, and investigating their involvement (or lack thereof) in the online environment. I do this by studying isolated communities and the Latinx community with a mixed-method approach. My research has appeared in Information, Communication & Society, Policy & Internet, Social Inclusion, and Gender, Place & Culture.

Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, I hold a BA in Social Communication from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and an MA in Media, Technology, and Society from Northwestern University. I am a graduate affiliate of the Center for Latinx Digital Media at Northwestern University and the Millennium Nucleus in Digital Inequalities and Opportunities in Chile.
